The School
The John F. Kennedy School (JFKS) is a Berlin public school, that was established in 1960. It serves a student body of approximately 820 students in the elementary school, entrance class through grade 6 and approximately 850 students in the secondary school in grades 7 through 13 (57% German, 33% American, 10% other nationalities). A faculty composed of equal numbers of German and American teachers staffs this bilingual, bicultural school. The school year consists of two semesters normally extending from late-August to early July. The calendar includes Thanksgiving, Christmas, fall, winter, and spring vacations, as well as American and German holidays.

JFKS is located in Zehlendorf, a residential area in the southwest of Berlin, and multiple BVG city buses and the S 1 train line provide easy public transportation. The school’s 10 buildings house an integrated elementary and high school. The school has 135 classrooms, nine science labs, two library-media centers, four computer labs, modern sports facilities with 2 gymnasiums, a fine arts and drama facility, and a cafeteria.

The curriculum combines features of both the American and German educational systems. Instruction is in German and English, with English being emphasized. American students learn German in formal, daily lessons beginning in the third grade. The program at all levels is designed to accommodate American children who have little or no knowledge of the German language. Classes in remedial reading and math are available in the elementary school. The Kennedy School emphasizes academic excellence. The secondary school, grades 7-13, offers students the option to attain the American high school diploma and/or the German Abitur. A comprehensive Advanced Placement program is also offered.

Numerous extra-curricular activities are available for both elementary and high school students. Musical performances and drama productions are particularly strong features of the school’s program. Students may also become involved in various individual and team sports, in student government, in yearbook, and literary or newspaper publications. For older students, class trips are scheduled to various European countries, and within Germany, depending on the particular grade level, which promote German-American integration among students.
