Numerous extracurricular activities (e.g., clubs, athletics, and performance groups) are open to both elementary and high school students. These activities promote German-American relations; enable students to learn, refine, and demonstrate their talents and skills outside the classroom; foster self-esteem, social cooperation, and leadership skills; and advance the integration of American and German JFKS students. The activity program is thus an essential part of the school. The extracurricular activities offered in the high school range from arts and crafts to science and various team and individual sports. Musical performances and drama productions are particularly strong features of the JFKS program. Students may also participate in student government and literary, yearbook, and newspaper publications. Depending on the particular grade level, older students, class trips may be scheduled to such destinations as Austria, England, France, Italy, Ireland, Greece, or areas within Germany.
